Prescriptive Authority Certification

Registrants who hold certification in Prescriptive Authority must comply with the BC Naturopathic Physicians Regulation and the College’s Scope of Practice for Naturopathic Physicians – Standards, Limits and Conditions for Prescribing Dispensing and Compounding Drugs.

A naturopathic doctor certified in Prescriptive Authority is not permitted to delegate this activity to any other person. It is professional misconduct to delegate any restricted activity, including prescribing.

To be certified in Prescriptive Authority, you must:

1. have the status of full registrant under s. 46 of the College Bylaws;

2. successfully complete and pass The Canadian Therapeutics and Prescribing Course for Naturopathic Doctors offered by Therapeutics Collaboration Education;

3. (a) complete and pass the examination from Therapeutics Collaboration Education for The Canadian Therapeutics and Prescribing Couse for Naturopathic Doctors – administered by CCNM-Boucher;

OR

(b) complete and pass the examination from Therapeutics Collaboration Education for The Canadian Therapeutics and Prescribing Couse for Naturopathic Doctors – administered by CONO AND complete and pass the Jurisprudence Pharmacy Exam in BC – administered by CCNM-Boucher;

4. submit your application within 24 months of completing the aforementioned exam;

5. hold current Naturopathic Advanced Life Support certification; and

6. provide evidence of PharmaNet access for your primary place of practice. Please allow sufficient time for setting up PharmaNet access through PRIME. You can contact PRIME Support to inquire about their processing timeline.

IMPORTANT Registrants who have completed the required prescribing exam/course are not permitted to prescribe in BC until they obtain a confirmation letter from CNPBC approving their certification in prescriptive authority after providing the required application requirements, including evidence of PharmaNet Access.

To maintain valid certification, you must:

  • maintain PRIME/PharmaNet Access;
  • satisfy the College’s CE Requirements (see Category “F”); and
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS) for HCP, or CPR for HCP with AED; and
    2. Naturopathic Advanced Life Support (NALS).
